Announcing the Goyen Literacy Fellowship

I am thrilled to announce our newest initiative: the Goyen Literacy Fellowship!

You can apply here!!!

You can nominate an incredible candidate here!!!

So what does this all mean?

It means that the Goyen Foundation will give teachers $2000 to document excellent literacy teaching in their classrooms. If you like our SoR Classroom project and want to get paid to help us create a library of content like this, keep reading…

______

What will the Fellows do?

Our fellows will document and share their exceptional, structured, and evidenced-based literacy instruction through videos, student work samples, and photographs. In other words, they will show the rest of us what exceptional, structured, and evidenced-based literacy instruction looks like.

Who should apply?

You should apply for this fellowship if you…

  • Implement structured literacy in your classroom.

  • Are hooked on phonemic awareness.

  • Believe in building content and background knowledge.

  • Are obsessed with “text sets” and “high-quality curricular materials.”

  • Dream about Scarborough’s Reading Rope.

  • Live in the United States (this may change later this year).

  • Think you would enjoy documenting and sharing your practice like some of the Twitter superstars featured here

In other words, if you’re a teacher who is committed to applying the science of reading in your classroom, we want to hear from you! Our assumption is that most of our applicants will be elementary and middle school teachers, but if you are bringing structured literacy to a high school classroom or your learning center, get in touch.

What does the fellowship entail?

  • An 8-week fellowship during the 2022-23 school year.

  • A $2,000 stipend. Half up front, half upon completion.

  • Fellows will systematically document literacy best practices through a combination of videos, student work samples, and photographs and write 1-3 blog posts about the experience.

  • The specific terms of the fellowship (content focus, content quantity) will be established with each fellow.

  • The Goyen Foundation will share your work on social media and build a library to share it on our website.

Why are you creating this fellowship?

  • To celebrate you and other teachers and your excellent work.

  • To offer teachers, school leaders, and researchers concrete examples of exceptional literacy instruction.

  • To showcase how beautiful, engaging, and exciting evidence-informed instruction is.

  • To build a network of educators who are purposefully and thoughtfully sharing their practice.

What’s the application process and timeline?

  • The application is here.

  • Applications are due on July 26th.

  • The application is short: a few identifying questions, 1 short response, and a copy of a lesson plan.

  • Finalists will complete a second task

How many fellows will you have?

  • We hope to have at least 10 fellows this school year!
